Daily Log

WEEK 1

Mon, Mar 30

Early 6 something -6:52- woke up, tried to ignore the surprisingly loud munching in the corner of my room, groaned internally as I wondered why I had ever agreed to babysit a ferret (oh by the way mom, I babysat a ferret)

7 something- got up, took the ferret’s (whose name is Noodle) food bowl out of the cage and slinked back into my bed, blissful until I heard it, the sound of rain I sighed and braced myself

7 something (moments later)- there it was the soft whining of my dog onyx, who for some strange reason is scared to death of thunderstorms even though he used to love him when he was a puppy, I help him get on my bed, the shivering mass of black fur tries to snuggle close to me. He’s vibrating at a speed that is definitely not compatible with sleep and I plop him softly on the foot of my bed. Murmuring “I’m sorry buddy, you’re ok” I lay back down, I can still feel him shaking. I relocate him to the daybed and try not to see the look of slight betrayal that shines through the dim grey light

late 7 something-8- the thunder has stopped, I haven’t been back to sleep since six, I watch vines and go downstairs, take my dog out, or rather, watch him walk out onto the steps, feel a raindrop, and then quickly come back inside

8-8:45 eat a bagel, some pineapple, charge my computer, drink some water, tried to fiddle with my blog

8:45-8:59 changing my blog up, finally got all my blog  pages to show up however they are on the bottom of the page

9:06-I have a dentist appointment at four, and I have a paper to finish for another class due at the end of the school day, plus I still have to put in my 8 hours, I make a quick mental checklist 1. Write paper 2. Write book 3. remember to freaking floss

9:06-10:06- finished the outline for my school essay, put butter on the counter to soften so I can have bread for a snack later.

10:07-12pm played with ferret, changed clothes, had a quick lunch with friends at waffle house, saw a man who looked like a turkey, was inspired to create a character

12:00-2:51- worked on essay
3:15-3:30 my dad picked me up to go to the dentist, my nana was with him. We dropped her off at Cumberland to get shoes to match her new purse.

3:3-4:30 at the dentist, they said I had really good teeth, I don’t know how they expect you to answer their questions with a sharp metal instrument in your mouth

4:30-5:00ish at Cumberland to pick nana back up, she wandered off to mail something and the up escalator was broken so she took a little while getting back. I was starving (note eat something before going to the dentist, cause that half hour wait afterward will kill ya) ended up grabbing Chinese food and eating for a few minutes

5:30-1:40 am- back at the house, ran around my room trying to find my good notebook (it has really big pages, thick paper, doesn’t smudge) and wrote, only got up to turn the lights on when it got dark. I realized as I looked at my ideas and outlines that the world I created could not 1. Be fully comprehended by 6 year olds in the amount of words I had to limit myself too, and 2. Could not be drawn to justice. I had to limit myself on what is physically possible for me to illustrate at least sort of decently and all but one of my ideas had to be scraped. Keeping my ideas simple, contained, manageable has always been hard and it matters now more than ever that I don’t bite off more than I can chew.

Hours for Day:8
Tues, Mar 31

4:54-59-wake up for some reason, I don’t quite remember what but I took a screenshot of both times the significance I assume will return to me when I go back to that dream filled delirious state

6:53-8:05-woke up, had a scary dream about dogs- the senior class was on a field trip and we went to a cafeteria, I opened the giant commercial fridge and there was an apartment in there with all these little weird looking dogs but they were nice, they looked like a cross between a wiener dog and a pug, I explore the creepy apartment and see a Chihuahua peeking its head out of a closet door, I open the door further and it’s a Chihuahua’s head and front legs on like a mastiff’s lower body, I look further into the closet and there is a dog made up of entirely of hind legs, no head, just four hind legs, I woke up disturbed, but crawled out of bed to the sound of my dog whining.

8:05-8:15- Took onyx out, back in bed, tried to back to sleep

8:15-8:55- sleep didn’t really happen, but unfortunately I have to get up for real now

8:55-9:05- gave onyx a belly rub and discovered that he had a small cut on his back leg, I called my mom and she scheduled a vet appointment for 10:30am

9:05-10:11- ate breakfast and got onyx’s stuff ready

10:11-10:30- threw a bagel under the broiler cause I was still hungry, ran upstairs to change out of pjs, and then ran immediately back downstairs as I realized that my bagel was burning
10:30-11:30- came home from vet, onyx is fine, ate pineapple

11:30-11:30- did stuff around the house, started to pack for my trip to Miami, didn’t really write at all, will have to make up the hours on Friday

Hours for Day:zero
Wed, Apr 1

7:33-8:54 I wake up, the sun cuts golden light into my room, my skin glows, I take a couple selfies, I take my dog for a quick walk and slink back under the covers.

9:01-10:03 I peruse social media, amidst the artfully filtered Instas  and blurry Snapchats of people screaming for no reason I find an article about a math prodigy. She’s ten years old, has a pretty brown skin, a big smile, and wears her hair in the braided style I used to rock when I was younger. She reminds me of myself, except that she’s already in college. Her name is Esther Okade. I no longer worry about trying to “dumb down” my book, kids are smart.

10:05-11:01 Cleaned my room up, I am a very messy and disorganized person by nature (you only have to peer at my dad’s tornado of an office to see where I get it from) in order for me to be productive I need lots of space (I write on my stomach and occasionally flop my legs about) and lots of light. I’m kinda like a plant.

11:31-3:05 I draw, well doodle rather, since I have to illustrate the book as well as write it I decided to work on making my stick figures into something more substantial. Spoiler alert: I can’t draw. The illustrations for this book are gonna be interesting…

3:07-4:58 someone please remind me to get a bigger trash can for recycling because the one I have now simply cannot hold all of my crumpled failures. But that’s good though right? Progress. My friend Levi calls me and asks if I want to go to Waffle House. I say yes, not because I want Waffle House but because Cami Creamery is across the street  from it and I want ice cream. I bring my notebook. We eat.

5:00-5:17 We stop at a gas station, I see a man with vitiligo, his brown skin stops just under his nose and is replaced by creamy white. He looks cool. I wonder to myself is I’ve ever seen a kid with vitiligo in the media. I haven’t.

6:02-7:10 We decide to get an early dinner, this time at a different Waffle House. Fact! Young adults are never full for more than 30 minutes. We talk about seeing a movie, I throw out Home. I’ve been wanting to see it for a while and I think it’ll help me out with this project. In the midst of deciding Levi gets a phone call from her mom. Apparently now were taking some of her little siblings and cousins to the movies with us.

7:15-8:32 We drive to Levi’s Mom’s house and exchange Levi’s car for a much bigger one. A parade of children flow from the front door; two girls, four and maybe six, two boys, around six and eight, and two more girls, tweens, around fourteen or fifteen. Levi’s cousin, a boy of nineteen, slips in the front seat and casually puts in his headphones. I found out why as ten seconds into the car ride the kids start screaming. SO-AND-SO IS TOUCHING ME! SO-AND-SO IS HOGGING THE BOOK! SO-AND-SO CAN’T EVEN READ ANYWAY! Instantly camp counselor mode clicks in; my soft but firm voice (“we can’t distract the driver y’all”) is punctuated by Levi’s  sharp look that comes from the rearview. The kids settle. We make it to the movie.

8:35-10:10 We watch the movie, I’m using this as a possible source of inspiration so I look at it with a critical eye, making mental notes. The main character is a girl named Tip, which itself is unusual (her full name is Gratuity) Her hair is an afro of bouncy curls and she has medium brown skin. She also has a body type that is different from the norm, she’s curvy, shaped like a pear; quite unlike the lithe, hour-glass shaped characters most of us grew up on. Even her voice is different, she has an island accent.
From a filmmaking standpoint the movie was cute but a lackluster, at least for the adults anyway. The kids loved it and no wonder, it’s geared entirely towards them. If you’ve ever seen Shrek or even some Spongebob episodes you’ll know that the creators put some jokes in their specifically for the adults that just fly over the kid’s head. This movie had none of those, but why should it? This movie is made for children, not everything has to cater to us. At times I felt like they broke the suspense too soon, you want the audience to be on the verge of tears before pulling them back. I enjoyed it but it reminded me not to fall upon the same old tropes and story arcs that dominate children’s media.

10:15-12:13am I write, research a little about Home and how it was made. I’m just trying to get ideas out.  A movie about aliens called Boov was produced I can come up with something.

Hours for Day 7
Thu, Apr 2

9:05-9:45am wake up and peruse social media, on Vices Snapchat they are talking about “redefining beauty for the next generation”; a model who wore her natural hair on the runway, a girl who changed herself to look like a fairy. I am intrigued.

10:37-1:20pm I write.

1:30-1:51pm My older cousin Jerry (Mom’s age, not old, old) is in  town and he likes to read just like I do. We drive to the used bookstore.

2:00-3:45pm I peruse the book store, petting random shop cats and looking at vintage children’s books. The common theme back then was to anthropomorphize everything and give anything with eyes mischievous eyebrows. I buy so many books they give me a free t-shirt.

4-7pm I write. Nothing seems to be good. Perfectionism when it comes to my writing has gotten me in trouble before and I need to realize that things aren’t going to be perfect and that changing my mind and jumping from idea to idea is only going to leave me with half-written stories and heartbreak rather than the actual finished project I need to produce.

7:45-8:30 My mom and Jerry are going to dinner. I get dressed and hop in the car because, hey, food.

8:30-11:15pm We have dinner at St. Cecilia (I recommend getting the Astral Plane if you go). I reach for a piece of bread ( I love bread) and accidentally move the parchment paper into the candle. I start a small fire. I learned that I can remain calm in mildly threatening situations. I also learned that parchment paper burns really fast, and if you say “fire”, you will have to repeat it 2 more times before anyone actually pays attention to you.

Hours for Day about 7

Fri, Apr 3
Displaying IMG_3007.PNGDisplaying IMG_3006.PNGDisplaying IMG_3005.PNGDisplaying IMG_3003.PNGNO SCHOOL – no hours owed (hours should be week total minus hours for this day) (but i did some anyway)

4:30-7:32 I have a flight to Miami and I haven’t packed yet. I pack, we (my mom, Jerry, and I) climb into the rental and ride, yawning, towards the sunrise

7:32-9:13 I’m on the plane. I try to sleep but fail, try to write but fail, try to draw and… surprisingly don’t fail my doodles are coming out like actual people instead of abstract art. I think I might actually be able to illustrate this thing.

9:30-11:31 We go to a Cuban restaurant for breakfast. I drink café con leche and eat scrambled eggs.

12:02-2:00 We get to the hotel and change into shorts (even the thought of jeans in Miami is sweat-inducing) and explore the hotel; my best friend Mia arrives. The hotel is made out of white marble, so much that I doubt there’s any left in nature. The sun bounces off of it and makes my eyes hurt.

2:00-4:41 We hit the pool and by hit, I mean lay on pool chairs and look at the pool. If it’s less than five feet deep is it even worth getting into? I like to jump in 6-year-old style. I’d hurt myself if I tried that here. The grass is the softest I’ve ever felt. I realize it’s fake. A blur of romance languages all around me. There are European women walking around who are more tan than I am. We’re in Florida but the only bugs I see are two ants trying desperately to climb up a palm. I touch the tree to see if it’s fake; It’s not. It’s hot out here, I squint at the sun.

4:45-5:37 I take a nap or at least try to

5:37-6:44 We get ready for dinner

Displaying IMG_3002.PNG7:15-9:19 Dinner. I take pictures of the food, ‘cause that’s what we do now; we wait and take pictures of the food before eating so we can remember how it was, lukewarm. The meatballs were fantastic, the rum cake was horrible.

9:30-2:55am I stayed up and worked; I realized that people had been texting me and briefly wondered what time it was over there, then I realized that I was in Florida and that there was no time zone change and that if I thought there was it was probably time for me to go to bed. I slept well.

WEEKEND/MAKE-UP HOURS?

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED FOR WEEK:30

TOTAL HOURS COMPLETED FOR WEEK:29

WEEK 2

Mon, Apr 6
Displaying IMG_3013.PNGNO SCHOOL – no hours owed (hours should be week total minus hours for this day)
(again, I did stuff anyway)
8:38 got up, said goodbye to my friend

10:00 noticed that I was covered in hives, between the sun and the salt my skin wasn’t having it. Eczema wont let me be great, sighed, got breakfast

11:40 had one last piece of bacon in front of the view

1:17 packed and on the way to the airport, “Hit The Road, Jack” is playing in the Uber. Fitting.

Displaying IMG_3012.PNG2:18 We get to the airport early, I stand in line forever for Nathan’s. People around me are muttering under their breath in various romance languages but I just scroll through a feminism blog on insta. I am capable of extreme patience if I have my phone.

3:15 I try to work on the plane but then abandon the idea. I’m tired.

7:00 I’m settled at home and I start working. Adventures in parasailing has made me want to write about a quest (long story short we hiked/biked/walked over 10 miles, went to 3 different hotels, and we’re put into the harness by a guy who was vaping something that smelled like cupcakes. Fun time overall). I write.
Displaying IMG_3014.PNG
8:22 I see a cool picture of a jewelry designer’s work and I’m intrigued by the dim water and flowing ink. Maybe this could be the inspiration for the villain?

4:23am I see a hexagonal quilt on insta and  immediately think dragon scales but I don’t want this to be the traditional “kill the dragon, save the princess” type book. I write, trying to rework the classic.

5:40 I stop writing

5:44 I go on random people’s singing vines, hoping that the music will help me fall asleep it kinda does.
Displaying IMG_3015.PNG
Hours: just under 11

Tues, Apr 7

Displaying IMG_2883.PNG8:28-12:27 wake up (look at social media, Food Network’s snapchat is talking about meatballs, I remember the Kobe meatballs I had in Miami (best in my life) and drool. I spend four more hours looking at food.

12:30 I finally get up

Displaying IMG_2884.PNG12:31-3:00 My neighbor is paying me to organize her bills for tax season so I do that. It’s tedious but the methodical sorting and placing puts me back into work mode

3:00-3:15 I take a break

3:16-7:20 I work; writing.

7:27-10:00 My friend is having her birthday dinner at Flip. My Sprite comes out smoking from what, presumably is liquid nitrogen. I am both slightly amused and vaguely concerned. I want some liquid nitrogen now.

Displaying IMG_2885.PNGHours: 4

Wed, Apr 8

8:45 I wake up

Displaying IMG_2900.PNG8:49-8:58 I make a schedule, hoping that it will provide structure to my day and help me balance senior project work (writing, editing, ect) with the other stuff I have to do. I also cant spell schedule

9:00-9:50 I work

Displaying IMG_2901.PNG9:52 I go downstairs to make breakfast and as I wait for my bagel to toast my oven starts to make a sound that seems like a warning for imminent explosion.

9:53-10:15 My oven doesn’t explode, I eat my bagel

Displaying IMG_2902.PNG10:15-4:00 I work, splitting my time between writing and practicing copying the illustration styles of various artists. I like the modern crispness of bold lines and simple strokes while at the same time the classic warmth of traditional illustration. I realize I cant do either because 1. I don’t have time and 2. my skills are nowhere near the artists’ whom I’m trying to emulate

4:00-4:10 I take my dog out for a short walk

Displaying IMG_2903.PNG4:10-5:05 I walk to the Little Azios , have lunch, read some of Tina Fey’s Bossy, a whole bunch of little kids come into the restaurant as I’m about to leave

5:10-5:24 walk home

5:30-8:30 work

Displaying IMG_2906.PNGDisplaying IMG_2904.PNG8:30-11:50 worked out and did yoga

Thu, Apr 9

Displaying IMG_2957.PNG5:40 I wake up, and realize how messed up my sleeping schedule is

Displaying IMG_2958.PNG5:41-12:58 I work, start to draft some possible characters, and as I turn to social media for inspiration I am reminded about how diversity isn’t as simple as black or white but also applies to gender or lack thereof, lifestyle choices (vegan, for one) and even clothing preferences. I want to make writing as diverse as possible in my career, so one feels like they don’t have some reflections of themselves, I walk to Starbucks and work more

12:59-3:01 I walk to Five Guys and have lunch and then I walk to Cami Creamery and then walk back to my house
Displaying IMG_2963.PNG
3:15-4:20 I work

Displaying IMG_2959.PNG4:26-4:30 I accidentally break into my friend’s house, her car was out front and the door was unlocked so I walked in. But the alarm was on , after several panicked calls, I shut the alarm off and the police don’t come. I give her ferret some water.

4:35-7:30 I finish the final outline for my book
